- Introductory Workshop

An introduction to Video Ensembles and Ecological Media Composition (EMC), a compositional method developed by Sergey Khismatov.

The workshop explores how recorded audiovisual events can become compositional material and how their inherent sonic and visual characteristics can be organised into fixed multichannel audiovisual works.

Using selected Video Ensembles as examples, the workshop introduces the principles of EMC, the compositional process and the relationship between sound, image, space and structure.

- Extended Workshop

Duration: 3 hours

Format: Introduction, practical work and discussion

For: Composition, electroacoustic composition, electronic music, sound art and media art programmes

The introductory workshop can be extended into a practical session. Following the presentation of the method and examples, students work with audiovisual material and develop a short Video Ensemble fragment together.

The focus is on the practical application of EMC and on exploring how audiovisual events can be selected, organised and developed into a compositional structure.

A lecture on Arseny Avraamov’s Symphony of Industrial Horns, one of the most unusual large-scale musical projects of the early 20th century.

The lecture discusses the origins of the work, its historical context and the idea of composing with industrial sound on an urban scale. It also introduces Sergey Khismatov’s reconstruction of the Symphony of Sirens, including its conception, spatial organisation and realisation.

The presentation combines historical material, audiovisual documentation and examples from the reconstruction.

A lecture on musical projects that challenge conventional ideas of instruments, space, technology, scale and performance.

The presentation brings together examples from different periods of 20th- and 21st-century music, ranging from large-scale spatial works and unusual instrumental concepts to projects involving technology, architecture, mass participation and new forms of musical organisation.

Examples may include Arseny Avraamov’s Symphony of Industrial Horns, Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Helicopter String Quartet, Georg Friedrich Haas’s 11,000 Strings and other projects that challenge conventional ideas of musical instruments, space, technology and scale.
